This is something i've had rattling around in my head for a while but obviously subjects like this don't come up all that often

I think in a way we need reigion. or something.

The thing is right, religion taught a lot of lessons that are actually good. Love thy neightbour, honesty, forgiveness, not being greedy and a whole bunch of other things.

Now, when the world is becoming increasingly run by a smaller and smaller number of people, there is nothing to keep these people honest. Seriously, greed is the biggest one here. In days gone by, the (just plucking what seens like a decent estimate from the air here) 15-20 people who sit on the baord of the biggest multinational conglomorates (news corporation, comcast, pepsico) would have been on their knees in church on a sunday to pray for forgiveness and to reflect upon their sins.

televangelists are horrible horrible people who swindle others out of money they need and exploiting their faith.

religion in some ways, yes, helped steer a moral compass for society. but the amount of death, prejudice and ironically immoral acts done in the name of religion (all religions) is hard to overlook. in this day and age where we can see what happens in the world at any point in time, religion really just needs to be boiled down to "don't be a dick"

because of how much money churches can bring in, the hypocrisy of those who scam money out of people through faith, denying themselves treatment for illness because they might get a special spot in heaven is detrimental to themselves and their families, especially if that money could've been used to aid the family after that person passes, should they have foregone treatment.

there's some good in what religion has taught, and there's centuries of culture and wonderful architecture, sculptures and paintings that are all thanks to religion. but as usual, what casts light casts a bigger shadow.

The uk isn't afflicted with this as much at the united states clearly is. christianity isn't engrained into the population in the same way. we don't have televagelists, and most of the god channels we can get are piped in from the USA anyway...

I don't want to drag th religion debate but I have to say that analyzing "religion" as a problem requires a lot of historical knowledge and the need to equate the material conditions of the given society, plus the political system and all of that contextual filthyness

using the televangelists or other religious scammers to attack "religion" sounds to me like taking those people who put on a lab coat and sell hair growth balms and using that against "science". people will scam other people by preying on ignorance and manipulating their common referrals, and I don't think any of us is truly immune to that, though it is certainly easier on some more than others.

I think 'ghosts' may exist but I have no idea what they are. I don't think they are your dead grandma trying to hug you or a spooky demon teabagging you in your sleep, but I think there might be something there. some naturally occurring type thing that we don't understand. that being said I know it's completely retarded and is backed by exactly nothing.

i know a few who claim to have seen ghosts and spirits of dead people they knew - rationale would say that they maybe fell asleep at some point and had an extremely vivid dream with that person. i've been in complete distress about a situation and a dream about it resolving so clearly that I still remember it to this day, yet when I awoke and realized it wasn't real, it hurt a lot more.

seeing spirits is probably similar, the stress of loss and the desire for closure would cause the sensation of talking with someone who's died, though many claim they were awake when it happened

sleep paralysis and/or being half awake I think explains a huge chunk of peoples experiences with 'seeing spirits' or claims of alien abduction. it happened to me only once but for a solid 30 seconds or so I was 100% sure there was someone trying to hurt me at my bedside. even though my room was completely void of light at the time, I could see the figure there and I was all like....freaking out man.

yes but religious thought promotes faith (belief with a lack of evidence) whereas scientific thought promotes the opposite. therefore, if you are scamming people by saying "nah man just believe me it works" through science, i can say "well tell me how you can prove this works" and the wont be able to. it has an error-correcting mechanism built in

whereas if someone religious says something completely nutty and you go "ok prove it" they can just respond "oh well i take it on faith, i have the hope its true, i can feel god in me so it must be true" or something completely independent and without reason

though of course then what should be attacked first is the lack of authenticity- that scamming people in either case makes you worse than a legitimate believer or a legitimate scientist. but i dont think this is to be debated, i dont think anyone that knows what they are saying would disagree
