Bringing more people

Do we want more new people?

Even if we did, how do we get them here?

Do you think we should/shouldn't?

Is this even an actual topic worth discussing?

I almost made this same exact thread.

Hell yeah, it would be nice to get some new blood up in here. But we all came from a forum about an overpopular webcomic about stick figures (which is kinda really weird to begin with), and here we are, years later detached completely from said comic & it's site with our own forum about... nothing.

So it's like, what now? What can we make, as a community, that would draw in people the way SS and C&H did? We're pretty funny people (pat your backs!) and some of us are artistic, we could probably make a whole new webcomic of sorts. I only suggest that because there's a tiny sliver of chance that maybe Rob Doodlebonkers or one of the others might actually endorse it, and one tweet from any of them could flood this place in a second.

That's kind of terrifying.

I've thought about this too but I can't think of any feasible way to get people here. It would be different if the site had a primary purpose and the forum was just here if people wanted, but that's not the case, and to make it that way would probably cost money and some serious ideas about what the primary content should/could be. The thing is, I don't really think anyone's dedicated enough to post weekly content anyway. Maybe though, depending on what it is. Then maybe a tweet from Rob or whatever would make sense. It would be easier to weed out the obvious dickheads if most of the focus was less on the forum content, and more on the other stuff. People would more slowly funnel in rather than just an onslaught of 14 year olds who read C&H raining directly upon the forum.

I'm... kinda not wanting the C&H crowd over here? I mean there was a time I thought they were funny but now... and the people that do find them funny... I don't know. Maybe.

Look guys the way I look at this forum, one of the ways anyway, is that it's a sort of blank slate wherein I can possibly stimulate some cool thing. I made games in the past, maybe I'll run some in the future but the point was I had fun making those games and seeing people trying them out. I even started on a SECRET PROJECT last year of a massive spame game that unfortunately is still incomplete, and will be until I finish my thesis.

Anywho my point is that if we have fun, other people might. If we like it, other people might. Heck, if there's a comic tournament and it goes smoothly... why not post about it somewhere else? People come and look and see a community, maybe they'll want to be a part of that. And maybe just maybe one or two won't be scared off by niki.

The forum is our oyster. Go hog wild. I'm on board with your shenanigans, I don't give a fuck.

But we are part of the C&H crowd, or at least were. Sure, we might get an influx of morons just like we used to, but back on the old forum it was like that and the few that weeded through and proved to be of substance became the forum regulars, including all of us that are active now. It's an idea to get people in, we can avoid that demographic altogether, but it's a connection that we kinda sorta maybe have.

We don't really need money to make something that'll catch on, didn't C&H start with Kris posting his stupid comics on a free forum about other stick figures? I'm just spitballing here, we don't have to make a comic, but I'm still willing to bet if we pool our collective talents and time together we can probably come up with something good.

it is my intention to have the primary site at www.hatrackhotel.net host some sort of content that would accomplish this goal

k-man speaks some truth- if the old comic can get some legs on a weirdo forum, then we have a chance. the issue here is, i think both webcomics and forums are becoming passe (ok look i know many people visit SA and that webcomics now have good fanbases but the era is over and new ones arent doing that well ok)

so here's my intention: stuff will happen. things will go on the "main site", and if at any point it is good or well-constructed enough to be shown to other people, then we will do that

the important point i want to make is, your support means everything. if i play a shitty song and put it on the page, it will really go nowhere if it's just ignored. when we last did the podcast, i know it was rough but i appreciated those who said anything at all about it

in the future, the best things you can do are 1) support the content thats there (this doesnt mean blind praise, please be critical) and 2) suggest/offer your own ideas because though id like to do it myself i am also kind of a busy bee

I refuse to believe that Paranatural, Poppy O' Possum, Prequel (holy shit a lot of P's) and Endtown are "not doing that well ok"

I wish I could have said the same for homosuck but NOPE he had to ruin that for me

but regardless, all of them have good art and clever writing

but they're all done by ONE person

just imagine if we get a writing staff, someone who draws and someone who colors

we already have clever people, people who are really good at drawing but I don't know which of them is good at coloring

this is obviously the hardest part, because any idea is potentially really stupid and could fail unless we come up with something that plays to our strengths. a webcomic seems achievable I guess if someone here thinks their humor would translate well into a comic and they have an idea of what they want it to look like. you can't really slap together something like that unless you're inspired though.

didn't some old forum member just start up a webcomic? maybe you could get him involved, that might be a good diea.

I was thinking we could do something similar to the avclub. tempest is clearly the master of video games, extremely knowledgeable. grue already has a tumblr dedicated to reviewing/talking about music (that was grue right?) I know I consume a shit ton of media, pretty much all of it music, but movies too if something stands out. diehard also listens to a lot of music I believe. legrand could review all sorts of animated goodness, if he had time. I would say risbolla for anime but he seems pretty dedicated to inserting at least 6 commas into every sentence. I guess diehard could contribute to that as well. I know all of us are capable of writing comprehensible reviews. maybe someone else here is knowledgeable about some other kind of media? books maybe? graphic novels? anyway I am just saying things.
