Now Trump is babbling about how UC Berkeley is getting defunded for denying him a platform which is a) false, they did give him a platform, which got cancelled for security reasons rather than ideological ones and b) lmao defunding UC Berkeley. Right. Sure thing, Trumpet, of course you will.

Why is that absolute mudcrawler giving speeches at Universities anyway? What's his CV? Tweeting? He's a moron with a following. UC Berkeley should have flat out refused to let him speak.

well, not inviting him would be something like not letting him speak on ideological grounds. i dont know what the make-up of berkeley is nowadays but theyre a pretty "hip" campus so i think its rad theyd have him speak in the first place

a republican students group invited him actually, and berkeley let them

idk what traditions american academia has but my take is prob that they just rent out auditoriums for whatever, its hardly political

i do, however, think that uc berkeley had every reason to not let it happen

curating speakers should be a bare minimum in any university. and no, its not about being right-wing, there are plenty right-wing intelletuals. milo is idiocy personified, he belongs in his own circus, whatever place he has a platform on shouldnt be a college

my point about berkeley is that they could have... institutionalized that decision by making it administratively. i like that quote that goes something like "the truth is like a lion- you dont have to feed it. let it loose and it will feed itself". they didnt have to push what is "known". they just let it play out and it ended up as it did

uh

that

look I don't mean to overstep here because I'm like a million miles away but that sounds incredibly naive of you

protests spawn naturally. berkeley acted admnistratively, someone asked for an auditorium or something, they gave it - I assume, after a fee. it wasn't organized by the university so there's no sense in asking for some sort of sponsorship or governing body making it official... they didn't "do" anything other than provide the platform. milo's speech was cancelled by the police. the police said that it was too dangerous. berkeley was like whatever

my point was a little more forward in the sense that I think that universities shouldn't just sell their spaces to whatever. but I hold this conservative view that allowing something within your "space" is tacitly endorsing it. or at least, endorsing its existence. I don't think that the likes of Milo belong in universities. heck, I know that ellen degeneres gives college speeches, and I'm reticent about that too. university should have standards of speech (not political necessarily) and Milo clearly doesn't check any standards in existence

i agree w most of this but u gotta remember we're some of the only leftists here lol

but im not sure i fully agree. i think universities should have the ability to no platform people like milo who are outright reactionary and have plans to (and actually did in the past) harm marginalized students, no question. but i mean harmless stuff like ellen idrc. she's not calling for genocide in her politics or her speeches, even if she's woefully liberal

I guess ellen is a bad example, I don't know how on top of her shit she is

but yeah certain ideas just have been tacitly shown to be false, there's nothing positive coming out of platforming them
