I get that this is a bad metaphor but there's an implication here that it's being used specifically to evoke the past persecution of women but I think people just use it as a common expression without considering the implications, like, "witch hunt" refers to any such situation

like there was the mccarthyist communist witch hunt aswell and I don't think it was meant in the woman-hating way

but yeah all things considered it's in bad taste, probably should look for a better expression
