it seems like the issue with odyssey is the way it operates to me (i don't own it disclaimer). there's SO many moons in the game and you don't have to collect them all to finish it, so it feels like there's not much of a cathartic release for finishing the game. it's just sort of like well cool, i beat the game but didn't actually finish it, time to hunker down and grind.

this is the problem with a lot of open world games and while i used to love them a lot, it's starting to turn me off of them as i end up having less and less time to play video games in my life.

i am also really irritated with franchises i love being turned into sparse, shallow open-world experiences at the expense of memorable, iconic moments (MGS, zelda) but i think odyssey is really solid

having so many moons makes it hard to 100% it without any intervention/outside info (outside of speedruns ive never ever looked up how to beat a thing or where something is in odyssey which im proud of) which is odd for a mario game, and makes some moons sort of meaningless, but i havent ever felt like their placement was just lazy or arbitrary. a lot of care was put into the layout and design of each world i m o
