Barthes says that there's no good reason to bind art and author together, and I pretty much agree with him. If the art is good, it deserves to be praised. If it's sexist or racist it's not good art. And if the artist is a rapist, just punish him. The reason your art professors shook the guy's hand is because they're spinelessly playing a social game and unfortunately society doesn't always take away status from rapists. You wouldn't say Aristotle's arguments concerning potentiality are invalid because he's a slave owning sexist, and this is just about the same case.
