ok serious talk time
starving artists of reddit will either come here because a) they like the forum or because b) the forum gives them a platform of some kind
a) for this to happen the forum needs activity on its own, that is, shit needs to happen regardless of whether or not new people come in. otherwise you bring a bunch new people to wither with us on a dead forum and that's a bad plan. this means that we should have some sort of reocurring set of activities among us. I had a few ideas but they are all postponed till after i finish my thesis, so if anyone wants to step up...
b) for this to happen a few things need to be set up in advance. namely, how are they getting exposition? this has to be a back-and-forth kind of thing, otherwise you'd just be exploiting wannabe artists for their skills to benefit your website only. I can't support that. obviously I know you can't pay them, but some sort of quid pro quo needs to happen for that to be fair. and that implies a substantial change in the way you run your website, from personal project to platform, with a concern for its "public image" that so far you've been lax about. maybe even change the name of the forum to something less meme-y and inside joke-y. also copyright-y. which is fine, but there's a slippery slope that's evident with how explosm turned out: in order for them to do their thing, they had to kill what to us was the soul of that website, namely a community of immature jackasses. a change to this website's dynamic could do the same.
it's like... either way, shit takes work. you can't just hope for the one-time thing to bring people in, the environment needs to be built and sustained. I mean, the only thing that keeps this forum afloat is that we've known eachother for an embarassing length of years. otherwise, it would have fizzled out fast.
