It doesn't matter the intention, he led men to their death. It would be like having a statue of Napoleon or Rommel, it doesn't forgive them for the deaths of their people. I am the same with the union generals like Grant or Sherman.

Grants strategy was to throw immigrants at the southern armies until the south ran out of bodies, while Sherman's was to raze cities to the ground in his March to the Sea. I would be absolutely disgusted if I saw statues of these men.
