why don't you get a hobby of some sort

I have an extended network of friends and acquaintances just from being involved in volunteer movie club activities and other cultural stuff

I have legitimately thought about going to my friends church to meet people

I'm not a social expert ™ but I wouldn't go anywhere with the specific purpose of meeting people. instead, I'd go somewhere because I like that thing, and people will be in your life naturally. ie if the church is of interest to you, that's fine, but if you're just there to make friends then... I mean, you're not interested in the same things those people are, what kind of friends do you expect to make

it's a non-denominational church and I played D&D with the pastor, it's really far away which is why I haven't gone
