hey guys it's pokemon time and we don't have a pokemon thread that isn't for the mobile game. did you guys get sun or moon? which one? both? why?

i got moon almost exclusively because alolan sandshrew is the tightest fuckin' thing ever and i want him real bad. the game is so fuckin good though, i talked about it in the november play thread but there's so many small quality of life improvements that have been like, 15+ years in the making. i think the reason I've had such a hard time getting into the newer 3D pokemon games like black, white, x and y is that they have so many things in them that are holdovers from games that came out in 1996, and just felt so clunky and archaic. there's still a few quirks here and there so far in SuMo, but fuck the games just feel so much better. combine that with a really fresh take on the games (gyms are out, u in hawaii bitch)

also check the Mystery Gift right now because it's a Munchlax and an item that turns one of Snorlax's moves into a Z-Move but idk how long its gonna be around

be sure you're doing this every day: you can scan QR codes of pokemon and if you scan 10 each day you can do an island scan that lets you find a non-alolan pokemon on the island

i happened to not look at any of the pokemon or the weird alolan forms (except basic starters and the two legendaries that are on the boxes obv). my #1 question so far: why is this weasel so pissed off

in any case my review is: tony is moderately right that the QoL is really great, however it is a result of an overarching (underlying?) hand-holding that i really hate. the game feels, so far, like im chasing after a series of checkpoints and people who wont leave me alone. it seems like every way EXCEPT the way im supposed to go is blocked off

also i usually play one of these with a certain ruleset (last game, it was: no pokemon id used before, one from each generation, single-type only, stage-1s only (team was: ninetales, umbreon, manectric, mismagius, beartic, gogoat)) and i want to only use new pokemon, at very least.... but the only ones ive seen are woodpecker and Pissed Off Weasel + the boxing crab that i accidentally killed. and the starters

also the rotom dex is cute enough but it takes up 40% of your bottom screen for no real reason and does pokemon need to fall into this trope too

i like that it's a real time map with checkpoints actually! my biggest problem with picking or/as back up is i can't remember what the last postgame stuff i did was.

i mean i get the handholding is a little annoying ben but come on dude it's still a kids game. older people playing it are playing it because we were part of the target demographic (kids) when the games started. im not gonna be upset that they're making a kids game a little easier for them to follow and understand

i get that it annoys me more now because im an adult, but i was a kid too when the games first came out with no hand-holding and i really enjoyed the freedom. it made accomplishments feel more like accomplishments instead of a checklist

also: i agree that it can be hard to remember what you were doing. but i think it was... fire red? that would recap your last steps when you loaded your save, for example. implement a quest log, even. but to literally barricade off areas until you successfully chase after/escort characters... its lame

yeah it's a little dumb when you're an adult but remembering that it's literally a game for kids makes it difficult for me to care all that much especially when the rest of the game is like rly rly good
and not all kids are gonna have that experience some are gonna have a really hard time without the handholding and im happy these games are gonna be easier for them to follow
and pokemon has ALWAYS done that to some extent.. now is just the first time there's actual, literal barricades

The hand holding in heart gold is unbearable. I have been playing the original for the first time since being a kid and its a refreshing breather compared to fucking Lyra telling me what the fucking daycare is used for.

i dunno, I guess it doesn't bother me much because of the way I play. I do /everything/ I can in an area before I move on anyway, so it doesn't bug me that I can't move on to route 3 before I finish route 2, etc. also i hope u guys been scanning your QR codes for FREE POKEMON i'm gonna post some links in the main post
