Of course, all those people are dead. Disreputable living artists present a more complex situation: Can we avoid having their behavior shape how we evaluate their work? How much should we be bothered that they stand to profit further by having their movies and books in circulation?

ive thought a lot about this for a long time tbh; a lot of the musicians whose music I really like are douchebags at least, or at worse outright fascists
in my mind I always thought of it this way - do the crime, but that doesn't or shouldn't stop the work. obviously this doesnt really work with hollywood stars bc they're going back from prison into being millionaires again, but should art as work suffer wholly because the entertainment industry is laid out as it is?
like Gaahl, who as other black metal dudes, is a cultural supremacist (an elitist, which flirts with white supremacy at times) and very likely a sex abuser? but he's not... a hotshot star or anything, he's a somewhat accomplished musician, and I don't feel particularly disturbed by the idea of sending him to jail while enjoying the music he makes. this of course if his life story wasn't all made up, not unlikely in black metal because it's black metal so who cares

Art is produced by people and if these people are deplorable human beings there's nothing to celebrate or enjoy in their art. You can't separate two things that are so tied, art doesn't exist in a bubble.
Talking about picasso, i didn't know these things about him but in design school we visited an exhibition of his early works and it was disturbing viewing the amount of misogyny and violence portrayed. And i could not understand why our teachers weren't adressing it, why we were talking about his talent and not about how awful those drawings were for how they treated half the population.
Right after that we saw the exhibition of a modern greek abstract painter, i remember enjoying it immensily and leaving feeling a lot of good things only to learn he was a rapist, with even a public admition and suddenly all his paintings were blood and disgust for me and i could not understand why my teachers paid him compliments and shook his hand in admiration and thanked him for his contribution to the art world.
There's plenty of art to enjoy and celebrate that doesn't come from these people unless u care more about art that comes primarily from white men. We don't need woody allen as much as we don't need johnny depp or kevin spacey or sean penn
